Proud To Serve The San Francisco Bay Area Since 1978
At Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer, in Oakland, California, we offer you compassion, experience and results. Our team of skilled attorneys and legal staff truly care about each of our clients. We are motivated to achieve the best possible jury verdicts and settlements for you and your family.
Over the last four decades, we have worked hard to earn our reputation as one of the Bay Area’s most successful and respected law firms. Today, we primarily serve catastrophic injury victims and their families in personal injury cases, as well as wronged employees in employment law cases. We also represent business owners facing litigation and consumers involved in insurance disputes. Additionally, we represent persons who have directly suffered and/or sustained injuries due to police brutality and/or the violation of their civil rights.
We handle cases on a contingency basis so that you and/or your loved one can focus on recovery. This means that upfront litigation costs are covered. We do not bill hourly for time spent on your case. We are only paid if you are awarded a judgment or if your matter settles. However, if a jury decides against you in trial, you will owe us nothing and we are paid nothing.

A Tradition Of Excellence
Attorneys J. Gary Gwilliam and Eric Ivary founded the firm in Oakland, California, in 1978. Jim Chiosso joined the firm in 1979 and was followed soon thereafter by Steven Cavalli. In 1986, Steven Brewer joined the firm, and the firm’s name was soon changed to include each of its partners.
Since that time, the five partners created a foundation where compassion and integrity contributed to the overall establishment of a superior track record for winning cases and achieving results that have positive impacts on our clients, beyond just the financial compensation recovered.
Our Approach To Legal Representation
Clients are likely to have more pressing needs than just legal representation. Clients often need the assistance of physicians, mental health care professionals, counselors and other experts. Our approach is to establish real relationships with our clients to ensure that we understand the challenges that they face and appropriately identify resources that serve them well.
When you work with our firm, we will approach your case in a holistic sense. We know financial compensation may not be your only concern. Ultimately, we seek justice for you so that you can achieve closure and restoration. This includes helping you get the compensation you need, as well as access to necessary services and support structures.
